armb: Dog jumping in water (Default)

A few days ago I saw a tail and rump as something mouselike dove down a hole when I lifted the lid of our compost bin. This morning, I saw more of it before it dove down a hole, and then it turned around and peered out, and then climbed out and sat on top of the compost in full view.
It did, however, hide when I went away and said "come and look at the mouse in our compost". I'll try and rememeber a camera next time I take the lid off.
Looking at Wikipedia photos, it looked more like a field mouse/wood mouse than a house mouse.

Cute! Especially if it *stays* out of the house.

If it ventures indoors, I can recommend the humane traps that resemble a small square bent pipe. As opposed to catching them in your bare hands, and getting bitten, which I've also tried.

We have cats and a terrier, so I don't think coming inside would be wise. Though I suspect only one of the cats is up to catching a mouse.
(Bertie (the terrier) was sniffing at a hole in the ground near the compost bin, under some coiled hose, this morning. I have no idea if it was a mousehole. Makes a change from sitting with his eye to the hole on the fence looking at the pheasants eating windfall apples.)
