A few friends comments sum it up:
I wasn't let down by the episode, mainly because I had already been let down by the season as a whole....
The slashers have taken over the canon. (well, unless you use the "slash has to be subtext, if it's in the text it's not slash" definition). Doctor/Jack ("I can feel the slash writers sharpening their pencils as we speak, type, whatever. Can you spell Squeeeeeeeeee!!!!"), Doctor/Rose, Doctor/Tardis. (Bit of a problem for Rose/Mickey stories, but I think a Rose/Mickey story (at least one that doesn't work equally well with random non-Who characters) is more of a hypothetical writing challenge than a common fan-writing pairing.)

Has anyone yet combined the "characters played by the same actor look the same" premise of this with the "Doctor looks the same as historical character" premise of The Massacre (cf. Ann/Nyssa in Black Orchid) in a Doctor/Casanova story? [EDIT: Um, I meant a story involving the Doctor and Casanova, not a Doctor/Casanova in the slash sense of "/", the confusion of identical looking characters (probably) wouldn't be relevent to that. Though I suppose the same story could have both elements, in different scenes.]

Since Casanova arrived in Paris in 1757, one might easily wonder at the expression on Madame de Pompadour's face at the Doctor rides through the mirror in 1758. No wonder Louis looked a bit miffed. Just the sort of thing that bloody Italian would do!
