It's the twentieth anniversary of the Bhopal disaster. I'd like to be able to believe nothing like that could happen again.

Not only will it probably happen again, it is still happening from last time.

Union Carbide paid off the governmemt of the state in question to avoid doing proper clean up and the site is still contaminating the local drinking water today.

I know the country in question is India, I don't remember which state within India the disaster happened in.
