Google seem to have realised they screwed up:

I'm still not sure what it's going to offer over existing social things.

Meanwhile, [livejournal.com profile] bohemiancoast has a neat summary of the problem, with incitefulinsightful link about some of the reasons why geeks are likely to make that sort of mistake (which I hadn't seen before, but I certainly recognise them).

I don't know if this was deliberate or not:
inciteful link
but oh, so appropriate!

Oops. No that wasn't deliberate. It does seem to have triggered a certain about of discussion about a specific unnamed person, but I'm sufficiently out of fandom not to know what that's about.

I've no idea who the person is, either, but every single GSF-related thread I have ever seen has generated rather more heat than light....

I don't find the "reasons" to be insightful - at least not about geeks. Rather they look to me like exactly the sort of things that neurotypicals believe/do and even knowingly use as emotional blackmail against each other. I think you'd be able to play fallacy bingo from those with any average set of tweens, teens, gang members, soap opera characters etc.

They're certainly none of them exclusive to geeks.
