Merlin

I would expect a series with characters named Merlin (a magician) and Arthur (son of Uther Pendragon) to be:

[ ] A retelling of Arthurian legend
[ ] Generic fantasy borrowing some Arthurian names, I'm cynical
[ ] Generic fantasy borrowing some Arthurian names, I've heard the reviews

Both b and c - I gave up after a few episodes of Robin Hood, since I just couldnlt manage to suspend my disbelief, and I can't believe Merlin will be better.

It wasn't better (at least not in any meaningful sense of better). It was very bad indeed. (NB There's been more than one bad version of Robin Hood though!)
