No response from Maplin's "ask a technical question about this item". Tried updating the firmware - no change. Tried a different disk in it (since I never used the Linux install that was on it on the downstairs computer), and that did work (same manufacturer, same age, so I have no idea why the difference). That disk is smaller than the MP3 collection the aim was to put on the network, but it was encouraging enough that I bought a new disk (from Maplin, so I could take both the disk and LanDisk back if they didn't work together without arguments about whose fault it was, 200Gb since it was also in the sale). At least it shows up on this machine - its SMB server doesn't get listed by Pam's internet radio (Logik IR100). Trying to debug SMB problems between two appliances doesn't appeal to me, but if it shows up on all three PCs, that'll be worthwhile.
[Edit: And now it does show up on the IR100 - I suspect it might have downloaded itself a firmware upgrade. And Pam's computer sees the net after using winipcfg to drop and renew a lease, after which it actually used the settings from the control panel, which a reboot didn't - why ipconfig /renew didn't do it, who knows. Something to do with APIPA, I suspect. Yes, this is very boring, but I might want to look back at it another time.]
