I don't trust God to be sane any more than I trust Bush. Search all the lists of the attributes of deity and see if you find "sanity" there.

(I am as serious about this as you are about considering the possibility...)

I think it's implicit in Anselm's Ontological argument - a sane God would be greater than an insane one.
"wise" and "perfect" do turn up in lists.

Another possibility I missed is that someone/something real is talking to Bush and telling him they are God - and lying.

When you talk to God, that's called "praying". When God talks to you, that's called "schizophrenia".

Not if other people believe you. Then it's called "prophecy". At least by the believers.

Or: he's lying, thinking it'll go down well with a particular audience.

Quite. There's quite a difference between "I feel God's words coming to me, "Go get the Palestinians their state" " and "I have a moral and religious imperative to get the Palestinians their state" - I wonder which he actually said. The BBC also unaccountably seem to have missed "claims Palestinian minister" off their headline statement, almost as if it were an undisputed version of events. Typical if shameless.
