Put a pin on a Google map, link it to its Wikipedia article. As Chris says "It turns out that the mindless task of clicking on stuff, finding out whether it's in Wikipedia, and then adding it to a list is surprisingly addictive".
(At least compared with "wait for the recompile, check the code in, wait for the recompile on other platforms, run the tests", but you can do both at once.)
You can do it the other way around too, find a Wikipedia article, look to see if it's on the map, add it.

Could this not be automated somehow?

Some Wikipedia place articles have locations in them, but not all the linked ones. I suppose ideally Wikipedia would have a standard way of including coordinates, and this would add them to places where it was missing, and reflect edits of the Wikipedia page.
