Installed Ubuntu (on second attempt, the copy CD I'd made was corrupt so I re-borrowed the official one for long enough to actually use it - bit worrying about the CD burner though.)
It didn't recognize the wireless card (Belkin F5D7000 54g PCI) out of the box, but it looks like there is a good chance of it being made to work (it's on the downstairs computer because that had more space for the spare hard disk, my upstairs one has a cable along the landing to the router).
