Things I plan to do this year

5) Use the cars less.
In the short term I don't have much choice (French Autoparts Centre still haven't delivered the replacement Ka engine they said they would on the 30th), but we're thinking of managing with only one car once it is fixed. That will change if Alice gets a full time job, but we'll have more money then. In the meantime I need to investigate season ticket prices (and compare using a car twice a week and a train three times with train five days). Once its warmer I'll cycle the whole way at least sometimes again, and maybe occasionally even while it's winter (the idea of a dynohub and SolidLight has a certain appeal), and on odd days I can drop Alice at work and drive to Cambridge with Nana fetching her.
Ely has a better train service to Cambridge (and, surprisingly, cheaper for a day return, at least the last few times I've used them), but is further away than Newmarket, and I can avoid the A142 for more of the Newmarket route (though a cyclist was killed on the Exning road not long before Christmas, so maybe the A142 isn't worse).
Newmarket station doesn't have any buildings, just small shelters on the single platform, but it does have a variety of bike racks and lockers. I might keep a bike at work (which is on Station Road, so I don't need a bike to get there from the station), or I might use the folder on those days when I anticipate using a bike in town at lunchtime.
