Had the tooth out this morning. A bit disconcerting, but not painful (the local anesthetic still tastes horrible (and I'm not supposed to rinse my mouth for hours) but I'm glad it was doing its job). The hole wasn't quite as deep as I thought (the dark was blackened inside, not shadow), but even bigger at the tooth surface (below the gum line). It did hold together enough to come out in one piece, although the dentist warned me before he started pulling that it was likely to break.
Not sure if I've lost any wisdom. I have no clue at all why a Pyrex based program is getting an assertion failure in startup, or why the debugger only wants to show me a dissassembly although it is a debug build, but I had no clue yesterday either.
