A friend of mine bought a Windcheetah for a commute that is a bit over half of mine (though in the opposite direction - lived in Cambridge, worked (for a while) in Commercial End). Less extreme, plenty of normal bikes cost that much. Even keeping the same bike, maybe some suspension (hub, fork, or seatpost), upgrade to STI gear levers (maybe with more gears), better lights (though maybe not going this far). Or perhaps Rohloff hub gears. Or maybe a hub dynamo (probably Shimano rather than the more expensive though more efficient SON). Better/more cycling shoes and other clothes.
