Tried cleaning the check valve on the Ka clutch, and slightly slackening all the bolts between engine and gearbox and doing them back up gradually, turning the engine over (by turning a jacked up wheel) to try and help it centre.
The nasty noise has now gone away, but I have a suspicion that it's an intermittent problem I've done nothing to, not a problem I've cured.
