Ka gearbox noises

The Ka has gone from making a slightly worrying whining sound (it was more worrying until I took it for a professional checkup, but Barry at Nice's thought it was ok) to making a much more worrying rattling noise (so much for the checkup).
I think it's the clutch release bearing - it does it in neutral (as well as in gear), but stops if you put your foot on the clutch pedal. Geting at that is at least a bit easier than taking the whole engine out, but not hugely. But this morning it occurred to me that it might be the check valve in the clutch hyraulic line that is supposed to maintain a gentle pressure on it not doing so.
So, do I try and fix it myself (and risk it happening again, since if it is the bearing disintegrated it's either a massive coincidence, or me failing to align it exactly when putting the old gearbox on the new engine, something that won't be any different doing it again), or do I pay to have it done (about £120 in labour, according to the garage recommended by timill, if the bearing does need replacing)?
